Our story

In 2000 Mr B and I both started university. He had grown up in a tiny village near Hull, in the northeast of England and had always wanted to study in London. He decided on a leafy campus university just outside London called Royal Holloway. I had grown up in a 'home county' outside London and I wanted to go up north to study. But I had not achieved the grades I needed to go to my chosen university and I was beside myself. Mama suggested visiting a university she had been to before which wasn't too far away - it still had places on its History course. I reluctantly agreed.

It was beautiful. The History department was one of the best in the UK. It was Royal Holloway. I was sold and filled in all the entry forms there and then.

We both studied History from 2000-2003 and hardly spoke to each other. We even shared a small tutorial class with the most weird and boring professor in the whole world, but that wasn't enough to bring us closer. All I knew about Mr B at that time was that he was in the football team (he always came to our tutorials in his kit) and that he was northern (he had an accent).

As the last year of my degree was finishing I made the decision to stay on for another year and do an MA in Modern History. I had loved my course and the university and was not ready to leave. None of my friends from my course were interested in doing a masters and so on the first day of the MA course I looked round the room of students to see if there was anyone I recognised. There were 3 or 4 I remembered from my bachelors degree... one of which was Mr B.
But we still didn't talk.

Unbeknown to me, one class when I wore a white jumper, I had caught the attention of Mr B. He thought I looked like an angel. He spent the whole of the first term trying to summon up the courage to talk to me (was I really so scary?). He didn't. We went home for the Christmas holidays. Even though we were away from university Mr B couldn't stop thinking about me.

The following term on one fateful Friday morning, Mr B was feeling brave and had changed his normal seat for one right next to where I usually sat. I took my place and Mr B started talking to me. We didn't speak for long, but he gleaned that I was going out that night to the students union. That night he asked me on a date, and I said yes. I was really surprised as I hardly knew him and I had no idea he had spent the last few months thinking about me but he seemed to be a nice guy so I thought 'why not'. We met the following week for drinks and to go to the cinema, but we never made it to watch a film - we talked and talked and talked all night.

I'm so thankful for all the little chance happenings that caused Mr B and I to be brought together. With Mr B by my side I feel complete.

  1. You are such a beautiful couple. I can't imagine what it was like to go to a school like that. It is beautiful! Unfortunatly, we do not have any schools that look like that here! That is why I love England so much...

Our wedding was such a happy day... I will have to do a 'wedding story' post! That will be a long one :)

Mrs. Cup, we visited Bali on our honeymoon, and I can't recommend it highly enough. If you've not been there, GO! It's the most beautiful island with such respectful, generous and genuine people. It was idyllic. I must also write a post about Bali and share my photos!
